Deeper in Debt with Steve Keen
Thurs March 13th – 7.00pm
=============================
Are you concerned about the economic
precipice we’re balancing upon?
This week has seen the largest handout to the
Victorian property industry in decades.
We’ve also seen Interest Rates tear another
shred off our hip pocket.
Meanwhile Rudd continues to push policies
that make the property lobby wealthier.
Is this debt boom worth it all? Hear Steve
Keen rip apart these issues and more on
Thursday March 13th from 7pm in the Prosper
rooms.  Steve is one of Australia’s leading
economics commentators, often quoted in the
Age and was on SBS News this week.
We are honoured to have him speak at our
premises and hope you will join us
for a philosophical glass of red after the
presentation. This event will see a new
format with Bryan Kavanagh joining Steve
following his presentation to discuss
the issues raised ‘in conversation’. Bryan is
looking forward to taking a leaf
out of Parkinson’s book to flesh out the
discussion.

What are we fundraising for?

We are fundraising to support a forum for
youth in Bougainville (North Solomon
Islands), to be held in April this year. The
forum will focus on developing the
skills and knowledge needed for the youth to
advocate for their communities on
environmental issues such as climate change.

Communities from the Carteret Islands
(Bougainville) are currently  being forced
to relocate their community due to rising sea
levels ruining food  crops. Young
people from this community will be attending
the forum, and the production of
short films made by the youth will enable them
to tell their stories to an international audience.

As for the fundraiser – should be a great night
and I hope to see you  all there
- please pass this on to your networks,
and bring your  friends/ family/ workmates/

specifically to support, promote and
celebrate local Indigenous arts, culture and

community has been phenomenal and there’ll
be more than 40 stallholders showcasing a
massive range of products and services over
the three nights from cultural arts and crafts
to massage and incense! There will also be a
diverse range of local Indigenous music,
dance performances and traditional craft
demonstrations (yes!).

Mark Watson’s Earth Summit
Saturday March 29: 4:00pm
Melbourne Town Hall, Main Hall
========================
He’s completely unhinged but he could just
save the planet.
Award-winning UK comedian and novelist
Mark Watson presents the world’s
first comedy version of An Inconvenient Truth.

Saturday March 29: 4:00pm
Melbourne Town Hall, Main Hall

Having set up ‘Crap at the Environment’, an
organisation for people who are
not very green but keen to do slightly better,
Mark Watson was the only comedian
among 150 volunteers to attend a three-day
training course in September 2007 with Al
Gore.

Embracing his newly minted eco-warrior cred,
Mark Watson is bussing across Australia
with his 24-hour green comedy show. His
aim? To halve his carbon footprint in a year.
And so far? “The whole thing got rather out of
hand!” he says.

In Melbourne, in this special one-off
appearance somewhere between
education and entertainment, Mark will convey
his version of the Nobel Prize winner
Al Gore’s legendary An Inconvenient Truth –
but with jokes. Seriously.

He hasn’t done it before and isn’t sure what
will happen, but with any luck,
it might be a turning point for the planet.

Tickets $10.00
Bookings Ticketmaster 1300 660 013 or at the
door.

New book: Oh, You Beautiful Doll
=============================
New book ‘Oh, You Beautiful Doll’ explores
altruism.
Written by Christina Louise Dicker, Sue
Jackson, Simone Mackinnon, J.C. Nicholls

RRP: $14 | 112 pp

Aduki independent press today released a
new book comprising four extended essays
exploring the notion of altruism. Altruism is a
complicated subject and the essays
contained in Oh, You Beautiful Doll and other
essays examine altruism from very
different angles. One essay challenges the
notion that reproduction and motherhood are
innately selfless acts while another essay
explores the author’s struggle with the concept
of altruism. One goes into detail about certain
altruistic people, with a look at the
dark side of giving yourself over to others. The
title essay examines the use of sex dolls
and whether or not a damaged person’s
behaviour can be altruistic if they remove
themselves from influencing others. Author of
the essay relating to motherhood, Christina
Louise Dicker, said: “Don’t get me wrong, I’m
not allergic to children-I’m actually a big fan of
kids. However, I take offence to a society that
still considers women who have babies to be
carrying out their sacred duty, while women
who do not have babies are regarded as
incomplete.”
This will no doubt be a highly contentious
essay and subject to much debate, but Dicker
presents a solid argument executed with a
sharp wit. Much scientific research and human
study has been conducted in this area
however these essays come at the topic from
a non-scientific perspective. The authors bring
up as many questions as they answer.
The writings are controversial, humbling,
humorous, serious, hopeful and cynical and
the perfect start to the task of bridging the
gaps in our knowledge and the gaps in the
conversation around this topic.

Oh, You Beautiful Doll and other essays is
available from all good bookshops
and online at www.aduki.net.au for a
recommended retail price of $14.00.

Invasion Day March & Share the Spirit

full listing and how you can create your
own action.

Melbourne is proud to recognise the
support of two events that have been
registered as part of the WSF Global Day
of Action.  Be part of both of them, by
joining the peaceful Invasion Day /
Survival Day March which will end up at
Treasure gardens where you can enjoy the
Share the Spirit festival.

+++ Time: Starting 12 Noon
+++  Start: Atherton Gardens, Cnr

+++  Finish Place: Treasury Gardens,

The Melbourne Social Forum organisers

26th, 2008 in Melbourne, Australia.

On Jan 26th, we will march in solidarity
with the Socialist Alliance, Australians for
Native Title and Reconciliation,
Indigenous Social Justice Association,
Reconciliation Victoria and other groups
in the 2008 Invasion day march in
Melbourne. We will start marching the

and end up at the Treasury gardens where
we will partake in the Share the Spirit
festival which will feature a traditional
welcome, Indigenous music, dance and
stalls. Drop by and say hello to us at the
MSF stall.
January 26th is commonly know as
Australia day. It marks the date of the
arrival of the first English settlers to
Australia and the colonisation of
Aboriginal land and it’s people.
Indigenous Australians know this day as
Invasion day or Survival day, reflecting
their survival against the European
invasion and the campaign of genocide
against Indigenous Australians that
followed.

Today Indigenous Australians still suffer
from injustice, discrimination and a
disregard for the sovereignty over the land
that they never conceded. Present pressing
issues that need addressing include
preventing further indigenous deaths in
police custody, compensation for the
survivors of the stolen generation and a
solution to the crisis in Indigenous health.
The Invasion day march will highlight
these issues and provide an opportunity
from people of all walks of life to come
together and remember what this day
really means to Indigenous Australians.

Visit www.melbournesocialforum.org for
more details.

Both the march  and the festival are
registered as a World Social Forum action
and are  endorsed by: Melbourne Social
Forum, Australians for Native Title and
Reconciliation, Indigenous Social Justice
Association, 3KND Radio

The marchis  organised by a collection of
groups who include The Socialist
Alliance, Australians for Native Title and
Reconciliation, Indigenous Social Justice
Association, Reconciliation Victoria.

Around the country there are literally
dozens of new groups, campaigning for
effective action on climate change.

As yet, this new movement has not been
able to gather in the one place.

The climate movement convergence seeks
to create this space in a one day forum,
aiming to bring together the remarkably
diverse climate change community we
have here in Victoria, including local
climate action groups, peak green groups,
thinkers and strategists, social activists
and other sectors concerned about climate
change, and progressive businesses.

We aim to provide an inspiring day of
workshops, open space for discussions, an
overview of the latest climate science,
ideas on building a strong and vibrant
movement, and the opportunity to ponder
what opportunities are now present with a
change in federal government.
To offer a workshop, please see the

ACTION ALERTS – Port Phillip Bay Bay
Dredging
=============================
Please email Peter Garrett about Bay
Dredging

At the beginning of February dredging
will begin in Port Phillip Bay (Melbourne,
Australia) by Dutch company Royal
Boskalis Westminster, putting marine life
in the bay at risk.  The southern waters of
Australia, including Port Phillip Bay, have
the  highest diversity of marine species
anywhere in the world. There are 5,000
species in the bay, 90% occur nowhere
else on Earth and many have never been
fully studied.

Call for 1-minute video – Engage Media
World Social Forum
=============================

Call for 1-minute video of Another
possible world in preparation for the
Global action on January 26th, 2008

Participate in constructing a great
collective audiovisual story, sharing a 1
minute video to say that: “An other World
is Possible” and necessary!  Contact
media@wsf2008.net to find out how you
can have your say.

The 26th of January 2008 will be an
occasion to demonstate in many different
ways, colors, mobilizations, artistic
performances, direct actions, meetings,
where we who recognize ourselves in the
Charter of principles of the World Social
Forum will make our voices heard.

The Day of Global Action called by the
World Social Forum will be the apex of a
week of mobilization across the planet.

Since Seattle in ’99, in Porto Alegre,
Genoa, Cancun, Mumbai, Nairobi, and
many other places on Earth, we
learn of
other narratives of what we want to be
possible, and that the right to
communication is also a right of liberty.

For January 26, 2008, we launch this call
to at the artists, musicians, film makers
and video producers, media activists and
telestreets, professionals from webTV,
communication and information and all
persons that would like to participate on
this day of world media action.

Help to make a large collective
audiovisual history of the Global week of
Mobilization and Action of January 2008,
producing and sharing short videos, of up
to one minute, and for free reproduction to
say that Another World is Possible?

This audiovisual mobilization is to have its
first major showing on the Day of Global
Action. In January this showing will be the
entry door to a gigantic virtual public
plaza. Use tools of the site and open or
free spaces that the internet offers to
publish or search for videos produced for
the global journal that are also able to be
recorded and taken to places and people
who do not have access to the net.

January 26, 2008 will be the construction
of a worldwide network — an informative
one that for a day shall be on the center of
the stage.

Let’s try to inter-communicate from al
parts of the Earth and affirm that “Another
world is possible”!

Book: Stick this in your memory hole:
Claiming back free speech and public debate
=============================

“Stick this in your memory hole”
Claiming back free speech and public debate,
book sticks it to government.
Paperback | ISBN 978-0-9803351-2-5 | RRP: $24.95 | 192 pp

Aduki independent press today released a new book
focused on the unraveling of Australian politics and society.
Stick this in your memory hole by Tristan Clark is an
unprecedented attack on an atrophied political system,
making it a must-read in the lead up to the election.

Comprising thirty-seven essay-style chapters, Stick
this in your memory hole is a brutally honest and bitingly
funny discussion of the state of Australian politics and
society. Tristan Clark tackles a range of issues including
politics, economics, consumerism, media, food, oil, logging,
water and transportation.

Employing both insightful critique and biting satire
‘Stick this in your memory hole’ dispenses with niceties to
push the boundaries of what is considered accepted thought and
speech in contemporary Australia .

“This book is both hysterically funny and serious as
Tristan provides his audience with startling facts and
information”, said aduki independent press publisher Emily
Clark.

“Stick this in your memory hole is definitely going to
ruffle a few feathers and piss people off. Some of the
material is pretty controversial and Tristan really doesn’t hold
back which is what makes the book such a compelling read”.

“We think it is high time someone had the guts to tell
our government and key players within the mainstream media
of this country exactly what they think and this book is
it”, she said.

The book is an important work at a time when radical
thought and debate have been seriously eroded from the
public discourse. Stick this in your memory hole
carries a strong message in support of free speech and stands in
protest of those who try are trying to eradicate our right to
voice an opinion and partake in the political process.

The title is a reference to George Orwell’s 1984, the
Memory Hole’ being a hole into which documents de
med
to be conflicting with ‘official truths’ were placed
for disposal. Tristan Clark, is indicative of the growing
dissent against government and represents a sociopolitical
voice outside of academia.

Stick this in your memory hole will be available in
print form for $24.95 at independent bookstores and online
from www.aduki.net.au. The book is licensed under the
Creative Commons open copyright scheme allowing users to
copy,
communicate, perform and adapt the work for non-
commercial purposes, as long as they attribute the original
author.
